The Way Of The Wizard: A Review
Deepak Chopra has authored many books, and made dozens of audio and videotape series and specials, and has been been translated all over the world, yet I believe this mid-90's written book, The Way of the Wizard, is his most valuable gift to my library.
The Way of the Wizard is written as a story about Merlin and a young, eventually-to-be, King Arthur. Merlin raises Arthur in the wizard's way and teaches in much the same manner as Socrates does in The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.
Each of the twenty lessons runs fluidly, as each chapter opens with several wizard truths, followed by the continuing story where these truths are introduced to Arthur. Then there is further discussion and living demonstration where we are drawn into the understanding of this way of the wizard.
This book did not just take me down the path of nodding agreement. There were plenty of notions, insights, and truly new thought. And that is what was surprising. I've been a dedicated student of metaphysics and spiritual growth for decades, and there were countless truths in this 1995 book that I had never heard expressed before.
Every lesson is elegantly simple and even poetically beautiful. But, watch out! You'll find yourself taken to a land so desirable and possible, you'll wander off in your own wondrous thoughts.
I'm not kidding about warning you. The dust jacket says, in part, "prepare to see all of your previous conceptions about success and happiness transformed."
Our minds are full of mixed signals. We get caught up in all our roles, as parent, child, neighbor, caretaker, and/or provider, and we don't find time to find out who we truly are. Each and every lesson in The Way of the Wizard feeds and awakens the mind to a more rewarding journey into the realm of boundless opportunity.
As you sense this growth of wisdom and experience through each lesson, newly recognized qualities unfold from within to help create the life we know we are meant to lead. The main purpose of learning from a wizard is to find the wizard within. Once this inner guide is found, you've found yourself.
"There is a teaching," Merlin said, "called the way of the wizard. Have you heard of it?"
The boy Arthur looked up from building the fire, which wasn't going well. Building a fire rarely went well on the damp mornings of early spring in the West Country.
"No, I've never heard of that," Arthur said, after a moment's consideration. "Wizards? Do you mean they do things a different way?"
"No, just the way we do," Merlin replied. "I am the last keeper of the wizard's way- and perhaps you will be the last to learn it."
One more thing from Deepak: "The only sentences of this book you will have to take on trust is that 1) A wizard exists in all of us, and 2) This wizard sees and knows everything."
The body and the mind may sleep, but the wizard is always awake.
